yuletide treasure stories

Not books, but fanfic stories. Online gift-exchange. I participated in Yuletide this year, it was interesting and hectic to say the last. But I did get my 1000 word story uploaded before Christmas Eve, so all was good. The story I wrote isn’t here, that might be listed after Jan 1, 2009.

YULETIDE TREASURE CHALLENGE 2008
(so many wonderful stories, alphabetical order)

GREEK/ROMAN MYTH
this is not a chick flick (Hades gets stabbed by Eros. Persephone tries to make sense of Hades in love. Is so not a chick flick.)

FAIRY TALES (trad)
The Average Prince (yes, this was written for me)
Dragonic Intervention (When the dragon takes the prince… the princess is mad)
Skin (Rumpelstiltskin in modern setting with a new ending)
Verity (“In which Princess Verity of Astermark sets out to rescue her friend Zel from the tower where a witch holds him captive.”)

MULAN (1998 Disney movie)(I actually like most of the stories this year, these are just a few)
True to Your Heart (the title of story comes from the soundtrack. yes, i own the cd.)
baozi (fluff. it was the title that drew me in)

NATIONAL TREASURE
The Spoons are Historical (in end, Riley ruins a very private moment between Ben and Abigail for the sake of history)
Happy Endings (“Well, worst-case scenario, Inauguration’s only 25 days away.”)

GARTH NIX – ABHORSEN SERIES
Think When the Bells do Chime (Lirael and Nick on adventure)
Dancing Like the Living (seven bells, seven things)

NEIL GAIMAN – STARDUST (BOOK OR COMIC)
Ribbons and Laces (Louisa Thorn is more like her brother than she assumed.)

STARDUST (2007 MOVIE)
Field and Fountain, Moor and Mountain (Tristan and Yvain find an alternative to having their offspring kill each other)
Pretences (chasing lightning for something else)

MYTHOLOGY – CHINESE
Red Sky by Morning (she is widely worshipped among the coast and the islands off southern china.)

ENCHANTED
Five Ways Reality Beats Fairytales

There are plenty of more great stories… total tally according to the front page was 2426 stories in a mind-boggling insane 1010 fandoms. I’m surely missing a lot more stories that I liked, because this time I’m jumping around. Yesterday I scrolled through the entire list looking for anything that caught my fancy.

I’ll go through the Diana Wynne-Jones and Ellen Kushner books later…

One last rec, from the past challenge
Pomona and Vertumnus (their story set in a modern college.)

non-book things

Monday: read lots of data for biometrics project
Monday: read Newsweek
Tuesday: read National Geographic

I have subscriptions to Newsweek and National Geographic.
Also read the university student-published newspaper.
And then read news from Yahoo, BBC, and MSN.

To finish reading this week – The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. So I can use it as a source for my English paper. I’ve read (I think) another book by Pollan, and it was mildly interesting.
