I actually heard of the TV series The Dresden Files before I started reading the books, but I never watched the series. Now that I’ve read all the books of the main series up to the 11th one, I decided that I’d go and watch the TV episodes, since they’re free on Hulu.com
I think it was a good thing that I started watching the episodes in the mindset that the TV series is NOT an exact replica of the books. More emphasis on “based” on the books, implying that the TV series is an AU to the books.
The episodes weren’t bad. As standalone TV episodes, I didn’t even have to watch them in order to get a feel of what’s going on. That’s the biggest difference between the books and the TV series. In the books, seemingly unrelated cases all end up being part of a bigger case. in The TV series, there’s no overarching storyline tying the entire series into one neat package, which would have made the narration stronger. Too bad it got canceled after one season.
